Come Celebrate this Mural!

It's amazing to think what the power of a single question can lead to!
Just a few months ago we asked the first people, "What would make Greensboro a Healthier City?"
Now look how much all of those answers have grown!

Come enjoy the power of thought, reflection, and action, in a community setting this Friday!

This Friday, August 5th, 6-9pm, we will be celebrating the mural unveiling of Greensboro's Healthy mural. We'll be celebrating at the corner of Lindsey St. and Church St., and if you need an address for your gps use 300 Church St.!

Aside from many wonderful people, we'll have music from Greensboro's very own radical drum corps Cakalak Thunder, a moon bounce, corn on the cob, peaches, and watermelon from local farms, some resources, and a few surprises!

So come enjoy this fine August Friday in style!

The power of community, through paint!

As the month of painting comes to a close it is necessary to acknowledge the community involvement and interactions with this mural. The interactions have taken place while we've been painting, people asking if they can bring their kids to help, or just thanking us in general for beautifying their walkway. Then one evening, I had been at a meeting in the library, and decide to sit across from the wall for a while. My goodness, what traffic and engagement took place! There were people walking home after work, the bus ran by a few times, and some girls  coming from downtown stopped and took pictures with the wall!
This mural is so much more than just some paint on a wall, it is a story, it is an amalgamation of many of Greensboro's voices. If the wall can help build bridges and incite thought, then we have done the right thing.
Let us keep up the good work, for a brighter future!

Exciting updates!

So much has been happening with the mural project over the past few weeks!

Here are some of our exciting updates:

  •  We have conducted hundreds of interviews with people throughout Greensboro!
  • The design of the mural is almost completed!
  • We have created a mini movie, and are about to launch a kickstarter to help secure the rest of our funds!
  • I say "rest of our funds" because we have secured a grant from The Gallucci Creative Fund, which will go towards covering the fee of the muralist!
So things are quite exciting in our neck of the woods, and we will let you know when our first painting day is!

Thank you for your continued support!

Our first blog!

Welcome to the first blog post of the Greensboro Mural Project!

Exciting times are afoot in Greensboro, and across the world, and so we are excited to be participating in this project at the current time! What is this Project you ask? Good Question!

We are in the process of a unique community art project: a collaborative mural on the retaining wall of the Edible School Yard, facing Lindsey St. in downtown Greensboro. This month we are hosting curbside conversations, collecting 500 answers to the question, “What would make Greensboro a healthy city?” We are looking for common themes, from as diverse an audience as possible, which we will then translate into a 40 ft mural. This project is inspired by Judy Baca’s “Great Wall of Los Angeles,” and the work of the Beehive Collective, combined with our belief and support in a healthier Greensboro. This is a city wide participatory art project. After analyzing the responses gathered from our curbside conversations, artist Kathleen Kennedy will design and outline the mural on the wall. Community members will be invited to color in the mural! Upon completion we will throw a block party for everyone in the Greensboro community!

If you would like to help out by helping interview people, helping to paint, fund-raise, or simply come to our kicking block party when the mural is completed , let us know and we can help plug you in!
